Munirah Al-Ashban is a freelance visual designer with a soon to launch stationery and notebooks line.
What does a visual designer do?
A visual designer does almost everything a graphic designer does but then we also add digital elements like user interface/user experience. My degree is in visual communication, so my main goal is to communicate the brand. Every element has to have a reasoning behind it. So sometimes, you’ll have to sacrifice what looks pretty for what makes more sense for the business or the brand. You have to find the balance between aesthetics and the best way to communicate the idea behind a product.
When did you know this is what you wanted to do?
I knew in high school! I picked up Photoshop when I was a teenager and I was obsessed. I wanted to create something, and I really liked making things. Back then, it wasn’t something that’s like very out there. That’s why when I got into college, I first, studied marketing for two years. Hated it! Two years into it, I went to my dad and I told him I’m changing my major to visual communication. By the time I graduated, the field started to get more recognition and more demand. Now all I hear is people wanting to hire either graphic or visual designers.
After your graduation, did you work anywhere before you started freelancing?
Yes, I worked at a company for year and a few months. Three weeks after I graduated, I had my first job interview, didn’t like it. Right after that, a friend of mine told me the company he works at had a vacancy. I went to the interview and got the job. After around a year I decided it’s time to leave. I wanted to get another job… but then friends of mine would ask me help them with design as temporary thing. Gradually, by word of mouth it picked up and I started freelancing. It wasn’t anything serious at first, so when it started picking up I’m like… huh! I like this! Now It’s been a good 3 -4 years. And now it feels like a good time to venture out a little.
What’s your next plan?
I’m starting a business that’s going to be stationery and notebooks. They’re going to be designed and produced inhouse. I’m still working on it but it’s seeing the light of day very soon! It’s been a couple of years in the process, research and all of that. It’s like a passion project that’s turned into something real.
What’s most challenging about being freelancer?
When people ask me if it’s scary being your own boss, I say that I’m always scared but I’m always hopeful. Being scared can be very productive. It means you care. For me, it’s still better than working at a stable job I’m not passionate about.

ماذا يفعل المصمم البصري؟
يقوم المصمم البصري بكل ما يقوم به مصمم الرسومات (مصمم الجرافك) تقريبًا ولكننا نضيف أيضًا عناصر رقمية مثل واجهة المستخدم / تجربة المستخدم. شهادتي الجامعية في التواصل البصري، لذا فإن هدفي الرئيسي هو توصيل العلامة التجارية. يجب أن يكون هناك سبب وراء كل عنصر. لذا في بعض الأحيان، سيكون عليك التضحية بما يبدو جميلًا لما هو أكثر منطقية بالنسبة للمشروع التجاري أو العلامة التجارية. عليك أن تجد التوازن بين الجماليات والطريقة الأفضل لإيصال الفكرة الكامنة وراء المنتج
متى عرفتِ أن هذا ما أردتِ القيام به؟
عرفت ذلك عندما كنت في المدرسة الثانوية! تعلمت الفوتوشوب عندما كنت مراهقة وكنت مهووسه به. كنت أرغب في إنشاء شيء ما، أحببت كثيراً فكرة صنع الأشياء. في ذلك الوقت، لم يكن هذا المجال معروفاً جدًا كما هو الحال الآن. لهذا السبب عندما دخلت الكلية، درست أولاً التسويق لمدة عامين. كرهته! بعد عامين من ذلك، ذهبت إلى والدي وقلت له أنني سأغير تخصصي إلى التواصل البصري. بحلول الوقت الذي تخرجت فيه، بدأ هذا المجال يحصل على المزيد من التقدير والطلب. الآن أغلب القطاعات ترغب في توظيف مصممي الجرافيك أو المصممين البصريين
بعد التخرج، هل عملتِ في أي مكان قبل أن تبدئي العمل مستقلة؟
نعم، عملت في شركة لمدة عام وبضعة أشهر. بعد ثلاثة أسابيع من تخرجي، أجريت أول مقابلة عمل لي، ولم تعجبني. بعد ذلك مباشرة، أخبرني صديق لي أن الشركة التي يعمل بها لديها وظيفة شاغرة. ذهبت إلى المقابلة وحصلت على الوظيفة. بعد حوالي عام قررت بأنه حان الوقت للمغادرة. كنت أرغب في الحصول على وظيفة أخرى … ولكن بعد ذلك طلب مني أصدقائي مساعدتهم في التصميم كشيء مؤقت. تدريجيا، وبواسطة الكلام فقط بدأ الناس يعرفون عملي وبدأت العمل المستقل. لم يكن الأمر جدياً في البداية، لذلك عندما بدأ العملاء طلبي، كنت مندهشه وأحببت ذلك! الآن مرت 3 – 4 سنوات. و يبدو انه حان الوقت المناسب للمجازفة قليلاً
ما هي خطتكِ القادمة؟
بدأت بالعمل بنشاط تجاري لتصميم وإنتاج القرطاسية والدفاتر. سوف أقوم بتصميمها وإنتاجها بمفردي. ما زلت أعمل عليها ولكنها سترى النور قريبًا جدًا! لقد مرت بضع سنوات في سير العملية والبحث وكل ما يخصها. إنه مشروع شغف بالنسبه لي وتحول إلى شيء حقيقي
ما هو التحدي الأكبر في العمل المستقل؟
عندما يسألني الناس ما إذا كان الأمر مخيفًا بالنسبة لي بأن أكون مسؤولة نفسي، أقول لهم بأنني أشعر بالخوف دائمًا إلا أنني دائمًا متفائلة. الخوف يمكن أن يكون مثمرًا للغاية. هذا يعني أنك تهتم. بالنسبة لي، لا يزال الأمر أفضل من العمل في وظيفة مستقرة لست شغوفة بها
