Ghanim Al-Hasawi is an engineer with 26 years of experience in the oil sector. He started his own construction company – Hallmark – in 1993.Today, his company has transformed into a family business offering a variety of services. His daughter Aishah is the company’s marketing manager.
Ghanim Al-Hasawi: I founded Hallmark General Trading and Contracting Company in 1993 while I was still working full time in the oil sector. When I first started, I worked in the construction sector mainly on villas and such. Then I stopped for a while because I got transferred to Al-Wafra and Rawdatain oil fields. It was such long distance that it made it difficult to keep up with both work and business.
Now that I’m retired my time is divided between the business and my consultation office – specialized in arbitration and disputes settlement. For me, this personal work is more rewarding. You’re your own boss, you work at your own pace, and nobody orders you around. My work with my wife and daughters is like that too. We work as a team. There’s no “boss”, no bureaucracy, which makes the work smoother and communication easier.
In the 90s, the majority of my work had to do with general construction including electrical work, plumbing, concrete frame structures, and complete houses and villas. I used to take on these projects on my own, but now we’ve expanded to other fields and I have my wife and daughters working with me. Today, we import goods, provide apartment renting services in Bursa – which is something I’ve been doing even before I retired. And we also do wedding and event planning which is my wife’s specialty.
Despite the ongoing delays in procedures due to the pandemic, we’ve used this time to improve and diversify our projects. For example, we started a car wash workshop early 2020, just before the lockdowns. It’s still under maintenance but we’ve prepared all that we need to start operating once restrictions ease. The pandemic definitely had some significant effects, but we haven’t lost our appetite for work.
Aishah Al-Hasawi: I started working with my father right after I graduated 2 years ago. I’ve been helping him with official paperwork and transactions and managing tasks that we have to do on a monthly basis. Right now, I’m also helping with importing and distributing wholesale products for Ramadan and Eid, things like tablecloths and tea sets. It can be overwhelming at first because it’s a lot of papers! But having someone with experience to refer back to and learn from makes it enjoyable.
